What do I wear to the Hearts of Fire Gala?

It's a black tie event so my fiance is wearing a tux. I have two dresses picked out. A shorter black and white cocktail dress or a long golden colored evening gown. It's silky and clingy, and both are very classy. But I don't want to be over-dressed or under-dressed. But if the men are wearing tuxedos, I thought the longer one would be more appropriate. Any advice?
