How do I find a good seamstress to do alternations on my BM dresses, wedding dress?

I have three BM dresses hanging in my closet that need to be altered. I will also probably need alterations on my wedding dress (a vintage dress that belonged to a family member). But I have no idea how to select a good seamstress in my area. How do I know I can trust them to do a good job? What kind of questions should I ask before hiring them?

I refuse to go through David Bridal's alterations place (where the BM dresses are from) so I want to hire a good local seamstress. Does anyone know about this stuff and can suggest the best way to find someone? I don't want to just open the phone book and pick the first one I see. Thanks.

I would start by asking some of your friends, colleagues, neighbors to see where they take their items to be altered. I would also do a search on Google Maps in your area for alterations, seamstress, tailor, etc. Check out the reviews there. Another option which I have found helpful in the past was to go to a local fabric store and ask for referrals - they usually know local seamstresses that are talented and may charge you less. Or they may have an in-house alterations team if it's a specialty fabric store.

I agree do NOT go to David's, especially with the vintage dress! Plus, I'm told that they can't alter the "design" of their dresses (in regards, to the BM ones) so if you have anything besides minor adjustments you want, they can't do it.
