What is "Universal" clothing for a Muslim woman?

I am going to Chicago next week and want to buy hijab and "Muslim clothing", I am considering to start trying hijab to see what it feels like. I do not want to look like an idiot (I am a White American) and wear something that makes me look fake.. Is Abaya universal for women? I was considering getting an Abaya and some scarves and hijab pins... What do you suggest I get?
What I mean when I say "looking fake" is wearing another cultures traditional clothing.. I don't want to look like a White girl trying to be something I am not..

I understand what you mean- you want to keep your cultural 'look' but in a modest manner. Abayas can be a large step and change from 'American clothing" but I think its beautiful and comfy. Hijabs come in different ways [some are snug on your head like a hood or get a large scarf and wrap it around your head, covering bosom]

Abayas to my knowledge may be considered universal as they are worn in many different ways, colors, and patterns around the world
