How can you tell when a gold necklace is fake?

my mom found a necklace that seems to be gold but she want to know if its real or not... how can we test the necklace to see if its real gold or not???

If it has no discoloration it is probably a fair quality. The weight would also be fairly high for something that size.
Also, gold jewelery usually has a small flat piece that shows how many carats the gold is.
