Need a Fashion Stylists opinion?

I'm a student journalist and I'm writing an article on crochet and I'd like a fashion stylists opinion on this trend. Desingers such as Missoni, Jean Paul Gaultier, Oscar De La Renta, Prada, and Moschino have used crochet in their spring collections. Here's an example:

I have two questions:
Why do you think designers incorporate crochet in to their collections? (whether it be a coat, dress, or just a tiny detail on a piece) And, what makes it appealing?

Obviously trent predictors have picked up on this and therefore so too have many designers.
I think designers incorporate it into their collections as it is a very versatile medium, it can be soft and ethereal or hard, metallic looking and edgy.
It is also a great wat to create impact on an item wether it be from a very small piece appliqued on to a collar of an overlay on a dress.
