If it's a fairly new relationship, pants is kinda "wifey" and he may take it as though you may have an issue with what he wears now. Also, pants fit people differently so it's best if he tries them on in case he doesn't like them.
With cologne you're always safe because you're buying him something you like the smell of, which is why we buy cologne.

A wallet is always nice though and Coach shows that you care about quality and you've spent a few extra dollars on him. Just make sure he needs a wallet and he isn't tied to his current one...maybe his mom bought it for him or something
