How do i dress for a college cocktail party?

I am very preppy student. I usually wear boat shoes, khakis, and some sort of designer polo. I am not in a fraternity, so i have not been to a formal in a while. On Friday, my friend invited me to a college cocktail party. I have never been too one and i don't know what where. There is going to be a lot of alcohol, so i don't want to wear that expensive clothing. Do i need to wear a blazer with a tie? Do i wear a suit, i have no idea.

Étiquettely speaking, you should wear something quasi-formal...i.e. no jeans, sneakers or polo shirts. Cocktail parties are basically mixers or ''meet-and-greets''. Dress in a shirt and tie (no jacket necessary), pressed pants and dress shoes. Proper grooming is a must (time to take out that gel), clean shave and pay attention to details. The key to making a lasting impression at these gatherings is to keep the drinking moderate and just dazzle everyone with your personality, make tons of eye contact, and make yourself known to everyone as a naturally great guy!! Have a great time and be yourself.
