How do i wash a knitted scarf?

Well i completed my first knitted scarf for my four year old son and of course he has already gotten ice cream all over it!!! So my question is how do i wash it so it doesn't fall apart of fade??

If it's polyester, just wash it in the machine with like colors. I've been knitting for years, and that's all you need to do.

If it's wool, hand wash in warm, SQUEEZE out the water and lay flat to dry.
